RGT Grade 8 Backing Tracks – Electric Guitar

Learning lead guitar concepts can be an enjoyable part of any private guitar lesson, for beginners, intermediate and advanced students alike.

Improvisation is also an important aspect of preparing for RGT Electric Guitar Exams at any level, including Grade 8, which is the focus of this article. .

Jamming along with guitar students in person during private lessons is fairly easy to do, as you are both in the same room. But, it can sometimes be tough to find the right material for students to practise at home, in-between one-on-one guitar lessons.

To help address the issue of studying soloing between guitar lessons, RGT Guitar Tutor Pete Farrugia has recently published a series of backing tracks on his YouTube channel to help students and teachers prepare for various RGT exams.

These tracks feature scale and chord shapes on the screen in order to aid in learning when soloing along to each video, helping you understand and learn about the various soloing concepts being used in each track.

Since learning with backing tracks is a positive way to practice guitar soloing between lessons, helping students prepare for their RGT Exams in the process, we have collected all seven of Pete’s backing tracks and linked them below so that you too can use these tracks in your teaching and studying at home.

  1. Dear Sir,

I will be sitting for grade 8 electric guitar performance exam on June 7th 2015 and i have been studying the entire book all by myself but unfortunately i have encountered a doubt as one of the teachers in the exam center mentioned me that i have to purchase a book call “Improvising Lead Guitar: Advanced Level” in order to complete section four of the grade 8 electric guitar book,is it necessary or is it an option?

I also noticed in the “LCM” website, they have mentioned that students should bring backing tracks on a compact disc to be played during the exam and applicants have a choice of two tracks from the above mentioned book( “Improvising Lead Guitar: Advanced Level )to be used during the improvisation section .

Please be kind enough to help me to clear this doubts so that i will be confident enough to face the exam.

    Regards,
    Ranen Francis

    • Hi Ranen.

For the level 8 Electric Guitar Performance Award you will need to perform two improvised lead solos. One of these can be played over the backing tracks you can download from http://www.downloadsforguitar.com (i.e. the chord charts given in the exam handbook). However the other track must be taken from the Advanced Improvising Lead Guitar Book. If preferred both improvised performances can be played over tracks from this Advanced Lead Guitar Book. The examiner will not provide and backing tracks so you will need to bring yours along in CD format. I hope this clarifies and wish you all the very best for 7th June.
