3 Tips for Recruiting Guitar Students Online

In this modern age we know that as guitar teachers we need to have a presence online in order to promote our music and teaching, reach new students and interact with potential students from our local, regional and international area.

While we need to have an online presence to promote our teaching, we sometimes don’t know where we should be spending our time online, or how to spend our time online in order to get the best return for our online investment.

To help you get started with building a positive and interactive online presence, that doesn’t swallow all of your free time, here are 3 tips for recruiting guitar students online that you can check out.

Recruiting Guitar Students Online Tip 1

The first tip that you can use when recruiting guitar students online is to know where to spend your time connecting with people through social networks, audio and video platforms on the net.

While you need to have an online presence, you don’t want to spend all of your time managing dozens of pages instead of spending time practicing, teaching, songwriting and gigging.

Here are four sites that you should have a presence on in order to reach potential students in different ways with your online presence.

Facebook – Running a guitar teacher page on Facebook is probably the best place to interact and connect with potential new students online.

YouTube – The best video site to promote your teaching by posting sample lessons, performances and other videos to reach your potential audience.

Soundcloud – As with YouTube, Soundcloud is the best way to post audio online and reach the largest amount of people as you upload sample audio lessons and performance tracks to your account.

Twitter – Almost as important as Facebook, Twitter is a different platform from FB, but is also a great way to reach out and connect with potential students online.

If you are new to the online promotion game, try one of these platforms and once you have the hang of it you can add a second site to your online presence.

One of the mistakes many people make when venturing online to look for students is that that start too many account on social networks etc. and then burn out before they get a return on their time invested in promoting their teaching online.

Recruiting Guitar Students Online Tip 2

Once you have set up your online pages on these social networks, video and audio sites, you will need to begin posting on these sites in a productive and interactive way to make sure you get the most out of your time online.

When posting online, here are three things that you can do in order to reach people in an effective way and not just use these sites as advertising billboards or your services or products, which can turn people off before they get to know your music and teaching online.

Ask Questions – One of the best ways to interact with people is to post questions and get their opinions on various music and guitar related items. Social networks are at their heart social, and so starting discussions with your audience is a great way to bring a social aspect to your online presence.

Support Others – If you have a band, other teacher, or anything related to what you do that you enjoy and want to share, share it on your pages. If you only post items related to what you do, it’s kind of like someone at a party who only talks about themselves all night. So, post links to other people that you like and support, and at the same time you can tag their pages and interact with them in a positive fashion online.

Varied Posts – Try posting text, pictures, video, audio, performances, teaching videos, rehearsals, interviews etc. on your pages. Having a variety of posts will ensure that your pages don’t become predictable, and that you offer a variety of ways to connect to people online.

As you can see, with just these three items in your online presence, you can create a positive experience for yourself and your audience when connecting with them through social networking, video and audio platforms.

Recruiting Guitar Students Online Tip 3

The final, and probably most important tip that we’ll look at is to respond to people who ask questions and comment on your posts online.

If you find someone posting a question on your FB or Twitter page, or commenting on a YouTube video that you uploaded, take the time to say thanks, answer the question and start a dialogue with that person.

Not only is this a good way to connect with potential students, but it shows that you aren’t just online to promote your services, but are there to be social and help people who post questions to you on your pages.
